Why Stereo Beats Virtual 7.1

Your ears detect direction through interaural time differences — tiny delays between ears. Virtual 7.1 adds artificial reverb that smears these cues. Clean stereo preserves them. In blind tests, pro gamers identify direction 23% faster with stereo than virtual surround.

Kill the Processing

Disable Windows Sonic, Dolby Atmos for Headphones, and any manufacturer surround software. These layers add 5–15ms of latency and distort spatial cues. Set output to stereo in Windows Sound Settings and every game's audio menu.

Position Matters

Open-back headphones produce a wider soundstage — the perceived space around you. For gaming, this means enemies behind you sound further back. Closed-back cans compress the stage but isolate noise. For competitive play, open-back wins 8 out of 10 times.

EQ the Right Way

Boost 2–4kHz by 2–3dB to enhance footstep clarity. Cut muddy 200–400Hz by 1–2dB. Leave 8kHz+ flat — over-boosting treble causes listening fatigue in long sessions. Use Equalizer APO (free) for system-wide control.
